What Are the Four Priciest Divorce Settlements in History?

divorce and dissolution

Your divorce may be expensive. Chances are, though, that it will not be as pricey as these four particular splits. They are among the heftiest divorce settlements in U.S. history.

  1. Neil Diamond and Marcia Murphey – $150 million

Diamond was quoted as saying “She deserves half my fortune. I wish her all the happiness $150 million can bring.” The star songwriter had married Murphey in 1969, so she was with him during his years of greatest commercial and financial success.

  1. Michael Jordan and Juanita Vanoy – $168 million

The couple were together for 17 years, from 1989 until 2006. Vanoy received half of Jordan’s full estate. This included full custody of the three children they had together, along with the couple’s seven-acre property outside of Chicago.

  1. Rupert Murdoch and Anna Murdoch – $1.7 billion

32 years is a long time, certainly. The Murdochs married in 1967 and remained together until 1999. 32 years of matrimony yielded Anna Murdoch the equivalent of 1,700 million-dollar bills. $110 million of that amount was paid in cash, reportedly. Murdoch had certainly done well for himself. In 2015, the USA Today reported that his media empire included 21st Century Fox, HarperCollins Publishing, Digital Real Estate Services, Amplift, Sky Italia, Sky Deutchland, Fox Broadcasting Company, and News Corp (including the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, The Sun, The Times, and MarketWatch).

  1. Jeff Bezos and Mackenzie Scott – $35 billion

Look at the amount that Michael Jordan paid his ex-wife: $168 million. Now multiply that amount by 208. That is correct. Bezos’ divorce settlement was more than 208 times that of Michael Jordan. Keep that in mind the next time you order an Amazon Prime shipment.
